Since I promised, here's the characters. Keep in mind- some of them are NOT my creations, but they had no names, so I named them. Feel free to read about them, or not, as you see fit.:
Taizou Hori/Dig Dug: The hero of the game. After returning home to his old farm, he found the crops gone, and one lone pooka eating the last of his flowers. He chased this pooka right down to the center of the Earth in a murderous rage, and now he's stuck in the middle of a huge conflict between the Pookas and Fygars.
Susumu Hori/Mr. Driller: Dig Dug's son. This little tyke followed his father, and is willing to help him out in any way he can.
No real name yet/Mrs. Dig Dug(The female in the purple/green suit.): Dig Dug's wife, and none too shabby a monster hunter herself. She's got a lot of seperate missions she's got to complete.
No real name yet/ Dug Dig(The one with the mustache and black/white suit.): The Wario to Dig Dug's Mario, this guy keeps on causing trouble for our heroes.
Pico(The pooka with the blue goggles): This guy is pretty friendly and willing to offer information and stuff.
Naps(The purple guy who's asleep): A rather dimwitted monster. This guy tends to fall asleep at times. He's also slow and easy to kill.
Pookapiller(The catipiller guy): A monster who is always hungry, vicious, and ill tempered.
Unicorner(The yellow guy with the horn): Charges you whenever he sees you.
Pooka(You know what it looks like- cute): A subterranian creature wearing googles. Be careful- they may be cute, but their stingers are deadly.
Lavabeast(The goo monster next to the pooka.): A shapeshifting monster whos meer touch could reduce anything to a pile of ashes.
Fygar(The Dragon): These guys are able to breathe fire. They are also the local bullies of the underground world.
Mechafygar(the robot dragon): a new secret weapon. Practically unstoppable.
Boombot (The battery-like guy): A robot that explodes when you pop it. Can take out anybody in its blast radius.
Excavator(The bomberman-like robot.): A robot driller that's armed with a pump of it's own and can give Dig Dug a dose of his own medicine if your not careful.
Princess Bik(The baby dragon): Future ruler of the fygars, she's kind of a spoiled brat.
Pacdude (Try to find him- he's there.): Huh? What's a Pac Man guy doing in a Dig Dug world?

Oh, and how did Namco change Dig Dug's personality on you?
Mostly what Namco did lately is sort of what they've been doing with him in the Mr. Driller games. I guess technically it's not so much changing up his personality, since technically with his original games he didn't have one, but it's like when you have a character with no personality and originally you go with giving them a bit of yours. It's hard to explain- I guess the right wording would be that they've been trying to elaborate his personality and it's different from how I imagined it when I was a kid playing the original games.
A friend of mine keeps on telling me to pursue Subtyrrany, but I'm shy about it. Especially since Namco's sort of changed up Dig Dugs personality on me.
On second thoughts, if you can't animate, this would also make a supereb comic book
